Description
Uebelmannia pectinifera (scientific name: *Uebelmannia pectinifera*) is a cactus species native to the Minas Gerais mountains of Brazil, growing in dry grasslands and rock fissures at elevations of 650–1,350 meters.
Individual plants are solitary and range from spherical to short cylindrical, with a skin that is deep reddish‑brown with a bluish‑grey tinge. The surface is covered with shiny, small warty projections made of silica cells; the stem has 15–18 ribs, and the areoles are densely arranged with dark brown spikes tipped in black that are somewhat triangular in shape.
The species bears yellow‑green small flowers at the apex; flowering occurs mainly from early spring to late summer, and the fruit is purple‑red.
During the growing season the plant requires daytime temperatures of 25–32 °C and nighttime temperatures not falling below 18 °C; during the winter dormancy period it should be kept above 15 °C and watering strictly controlled.
During summer, mist spray should be applied early and late each day to maintain air humidity, but water accumulation in the leaf centers should be avoided.
