Description
Desert sumbul (scientific name: Senna meridionalis) is a small deciduous shrub in the legume family, native to the arid and semi‑arid regions of Madagascar. It is renowned for its unique diurnal leaf changes, rustic tuberous root morphology, and ornamental value, and is commonly used in horticultural bonsai and ecological restoration.
Native to the southwest and south arid and semi‑arid areas of Madagascar, its distribution covers about 20,000 square kilometres. It is commonly found in deciduous forests or shrublands, at elevations up to 500 m.
Growth characteristics include:
– Heat tolerant (optimal temperature 20–38 °C); can tolerate short‑term temperatures of 5 °C.
– Prefers full sun to partial shade (seedlings need shade).
– Deep root system and symbiosis with nitrogen‑fixing bacteria improve soil fertility and reduce soil erosion.
