Description
Purple-backed Lotus (scientific name: Petopentia natalensis) is a tuberous plant of the Loaceae family, also known as Exotic Oil Mandarin, but note that this synonym is often confused with similarly named plants in the Euphorbiaceae family. Its leaves are dark green and glossy, with a bright purple underside, and the plant loses its leaves and goes dormant in winter, making it a summer-type species. This plant has strong adaptability; during care it should be grown in a well‑draining granular soil mix, and watering must be reduced during the dormant period. Because of its tuberous nature and the stark contrast of leaf color, it readily exhibits ornamental qualities when cultivated. Temperature: The optimal growing range is 20 °C to 35 °C; with a large day‑night temperature difference, some varieties may develop red stems. In summer, continuous high heat should be avoided; when temperatures exceed 35 °C, most varieties grow slowly, and above 38 °C they enter forced dormancy. In winter, indoor temperature should be maintained at no less than 5 °C to prevent frost damage.
