Description

Fine Ball (scientific name: Pelecyphora aselliformis) is a perennial plant in the genus Pelecyphora of the cactus family, native to northern Mexico.
The stem is short and cylindrical, 5–10 cm tall and 2–5 cm in diameter, with flattened, spirally arranged warts on its surface. Each areole bears 40–60 white, ribbon‑shaped spines arranged in a comb‑like fashion.
From late spring to early autumn, pink or violet flowers bloom at the stem tip; the outer petals are smaller.
Fine Ball is relatively easy to cultivate, but it grows slowly; grafting can be used to increase its growth rate.
Fine Ball prefers well‑drained soil and plenty of sunlight (adequate light is required; control watering to keep the plant compact without excessive elongation). It originates from under tree canopies, so it is sensitive to intense sunlight but can tolerate some shade.
In summer, provide shade, ventilation, and heat dissipation. In winter, bring the plant indoors, control watering, and enhance its cold tolerance.
Fine Ball seedlings grow slowly and are quite delicate. As they mature, the terminal globe continually enlarges, so mature plants often have a club‑shaped appearance.
