Description

Pelargonium triste (common name: Featherleaf Geranium) is a perennial succulent with tuberous roots belonging to the Geraniaceae family and the Geranium genus, and it falls under the suborder Primordial Petal within the order Geraniales. Its massive tuberous roots have an aged bark‑like epidermis, are rich in starch and edible, and secrete resin on the surface that can be used to extract essential oil. The feathery leaves are hairy and dry out in summer. The flowers resemble geraniums, appearing white, pale yellow, or pale pink, with petals marked by purple‑red lines and emitting a sweet fragrance. It is native to the Mediterranean climate zone of the Cape Province in South Africa. In winter it requires ample light and limited water, while in summer it goes into dormancy and needs a dry environment. As a winter‑type succulent, its robust, ancient‑looking roots provide horticultural value for root display, leaf appreciation, and fragrance, and it is frequently cultivated as a bonsai. In its native range it is already considered a rare plant.
