Description
Carmen’s cactus (scientific name: *Mammillaria carmenae*) is a perennial succulent plant in the family Cactaceae, genus Mammillaria, native to the mountain rock fissure habitats of Tamaulipas, Mexico. Its globular to cylindrical stems are densely covered with soft, radiating spines, and pale white to pink flowers encircle the stem, blooming intermittently year‑round in warm regions. Wild populations occur in north‑facing rock fissures at elevations of 850–1900 meters, relying on dew formed by diurnal temperature differences to maintain water balance. During the winter dormancy period (November to February of the following year) the stems contract and develop a waxy protective layer on the surface. Laboratory observations indicate that temperatures below 5 °C trigger metabolic arrest, but brief exposure to –2 °C does not cause frost damage.
