Description
The unique Mexican new green column cactus, the hairy caterpillar cactus (Stenocereus eruca), is also known as Voldemort, the crawling devil, and the wandering cactus.
Unlike typical cacti, it grows upright when young and gradually becomes prostrate over time. The hairy caterpillar cactus “lies down” to grow because its stiff, long spines can embed into the sand to prevent being blown away. Its front half continues to grow, while the rear half separates, replicates itself, disassembles the main trunk, and moves across the desert to survive.
In mild, humid environments, they can grow over 60 cm per year, but in hot, arid conditions growth is very slow. Day after day they shed old growth, grow new, and keep moving forward.
