Description
Peyote (Lophophora williamsii (Lem. ex Salm-Dyck) J. M. Coult.) is a perennial succulent plant in the cactus family, belonging to the genus Lophophora. Mature plants grow in clusters, with a roundish, carrot‑shaped fleshy root and a somewhat spherical body. The outer skin is dark green or grayish‑green, and the plant height is 5–8 cm. The ribs are either vertical or spiral, and the apex bears many soft hairs. The small flowers are bell‑shaped or funnel‑shaped, ranging from pale pink to reddish‑purple. The fruit is pinkish and stick‑shaped, containing more than ten black seeds. It is distributed in central Mexico and the desert regions of Texas, USA. The plant prefers warm, dry, and sunny conditions and is intolerant of waterlogging, tolerating drought well.
Peyote is reputed to have therapeutic effects for toothache, labor pain, fever, chest pain, skin diseases, rheumatism, diabetes, colds, and blindness.
