Description
Sirtong (scientific name: Frailea asterioides) is a cactus species in the genus Frailea, named in honor of the plant collector Manuel Rile, and is native to southern Brazil and northern Uruguay. The plant is a small, upright-rooted, flattened‑spherical species; its green‑brown epidermis turns purplish‑red under sunlight, and it has 10–15 low, flat ridges. The spines are initially red and later turn black. The flowers are yellow and close after pollination. The fruit is juicy with a thick pericarp. The cactus genus Frailea is named in honor of the cactus plant collector M. Fraile. At the end of the 19th century, eastern regions of South America, including Paraguay, Uruguay, and Brazil, began settlement and colonization. The area has a dry subtropical monsoon grassland climate, with wet summers and dry winters. The terrain consists mainly of limestone and sandstone hills and alluvial plains, with tall stalks dotted across the grassland.
