Description
Black Moon Ball (scientific name: Epithelantha unguispina) is a species of globular cactus in the genus Epithelantha of the cactus family. It was originally a variant of Epithelantha, later recognized as a distinct species. The plant is globular or cylindrical, its surface densely covered with small wart‑like tubercles arranged spirally. At each soft spine there is a short gray‑black spine growing downward, and the clustered lateral shoots are often wrapped in white spine scales. Black Moon Ball is found in the state of Nuevo León, Mexico, growing primarily in cracks of limestone cliffs at an elevation of about 1,200 m. The species produces pink, funnel‑shaped small flowers from May to July each year, which are self‑pollinating, and the fruit is red. Because seeds are scarce and seedling cultivation is difficult, reproduction mainly relies on vegetative propagation from lateral shoots. Cultivation requires strong light and ventilation to maintain a compact habit.
