Description
Red Sun (scientific name: Echinocereus rigidissimus subsp. rubispinus) is a subspecies of the cactus genus Mammillaria, native to Mexico. Its globe is cylindrical and gradient-colored, covered with dense red spines, with the spine bases arranged in a spiral, giving it a unique ornamental appeal. Pinkish‑red cup‑shaped flowers open at the apex, usually blooming from late spring to summer. It originates from the Chihuahua Desert region of Mexico, at elevations of 800–1,500 m on semi‑arid hillsides. The natural habitat has an average annual precipitation of less than 300 mm, with day‑night temperature differences exceeding 20 °C. It mainly grows in sandy soil with high organic matter content found in rock fissures. When cultivated artificially, the original environment should be simulated using a mixed substrate with more than 70 % particle content. As of 2023, horticultural practice indicates that the variety grows best under a 35 °C day and 15 °C night environment.
