Description
Red Sun (scientific name: Echinocereus rigidissimus subsp. rubispinus) is a subspecies of the cactus family and the genus Opuntia. It is native to Mexico. Its globular body is cylindrical with a gradient color, covered with dense red spines, and the spines are arranged in a spiral pattern, giving it a unique ornamental appearance. The rose-pink cup-shaped flowers open at the tip, usually blooming from late spring to summer. It is native to the Chihuahuan Desert region of Mexico, on semi-arid mountain slopes at elevations of 800–1500 meters. The natural habitat has an annual average rainfall of less than 300 millimeters, and the diurnal temperature difference can exceed 20 degrees Celsius. The main growth substrate is sandy soil with a high content of humus in the cracks of rocks. To cultivate it artificially, the native environment must be simulated by using a mix of substrate with more than 70% particle content. As of 2023, horticultural practice indicates that the variety grows best at daytime temperatures of 35 °C and nighttime temperatures of 15 °C.
