Description
The Devil’s Needle Hell (scientific name: *Alluaudia montagnacii*) is a succulent shrub in the family Arecaceae, subfamily Arecinae, native to Madagascar. In its juvenile stage the plant grows prostrate; once mature it develops into an upright tree form, with fleshy stems up to 6 meters tall, densely covered in sharp, hard, conical spines. Heart‑shaped succulent leaves are opposite, situated in the gaps between the spines, and shed in the dry season. The leaves are dark green and thick, with slightly concave tips, growing in pairs within the stem‑spine gaps, and serve as a food source for the ring‑tailed lemur.
