Description
Yao Yan Agave (Latin name: Agave utahensis) is one of the most attractive varieties among succulent plants of the Agavaceae family. Its morphology is unique: yellow leaves curl upward, wrapping around blue‑green leaves, resembling a cluster of burning flames, alluring and wild. The two main types are Nevada Yao Yan and Curved‑Spined Yao Yan. The native ranges of Nevada Yao Yan (medium‑small) and Curved‑Spined Yao Yan (medium‑small, mostly gregarious in the wild) are in Nevada and California, USA, at elevations of 1,500–1,800 meters in the Ivanpah and Clark Mountains, usually growing in limestone areas. Because Curved‑Spined Yao Yan and Nevada Yao Yan share the same distribution in Nevada, early on Curved‑Spined Yao Yan was considered a subspecies or variant of Nevada Yao Yan, but not all Curved‑Spined Yao Yan exhibit the folded type of bent spines; most plants’ spines can only show a certain degree of curved bending. Unlike other agaves, Yao Yan mainly grows in cool environments and can theoretically withstand temperatures as low as minus 18 °C or lower.
