Description
The Princess Thunderbolt Yellow Mid‑Pattern (scientific name: *Agave isthmensis* ‘Hoi Raiz’) is a small succulent in the Agavaceae family, genus *Agave*, and is a variegated form of the Thunderbolt. The plant has no stem; the leaves are short and wide, crab‑shell shaped, with fleshy teeth and reddish‑brown short spines along the margins, and a vertical yellow variegated stripe runs through the middle of the leaf surface, giving it a translucent, jade‑like texture. Because the variegated area covers more than 50 % of the leaf, it is a rare horticultural variety within its genus. This variety originated from a bud mutation of the Princess Thunderbolt White Mid‑Pattern; the original Thunderbolt species is native to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. It grows slowly, prefers dappled light or shade, and can be scorched by strong summer light; in winter watering must be controlled to prevent root rot. It is best cultivated in a granulated mix to ensure good aeration. The variegation is caused by chlorophyll deficiency, which results in low photosynthetic efficiency, poor stability, and a tendency to revert to the white pattern or die. The lower part of the leaf tip shows a characteristic fissure, so daily care should keep the substrate slightly dry.
