Description
Cai Shan, also known as Qing Shan Jin and Ji Shanhu Jin, is a clumping succulent shrub in the cactus family, genus Opuntia, and is a variegated form of Ji Shanhu. The plant can reach 1.5–3 meters in height, with branches that are broadly obovate or nearly circular. The surface bears spiny cavities and is densely covered with short wool. The flowers are radiate, with yellow petals that are 5–6.5 cm in diameter. The fruit is purplish‑red, and the seeds are flattened and round. Cai Shan originates from tropical arid regions of the southern United States, the West Indies, and northern South America. It is robust, prefers bright light, tolerates high temperatures and drought, and grows best at 20–30 °C. During winter it should be kept above 10 °C to avoid frost damage.
