Description

Ortegocactus macdougallii (Imperial Ball) is a rare cactus species in the family Cactaceae, native to the Oaxaca region of Mexico (on the limestone cliffs at about 2000 meters elevation). It is currently listed by the Mexican government as a threatened species. The plant is small, either spherical or short columnar, with a diameter of 3–4 cm. Its epidermis is light green or gray, often showing reddish‑brown patches at the base—a natural occurrence. The spines are black, with one central spine and 7–8 marginal spines; the areoles bear dual‑type spine clusters. The flowers are yellow and funnel‑shaped, blooming from spring to early summer and lasting several days.
