Description
White Birch Qilin (scientific name: Euphorbia mammillaris ‘Variegata’) is a variegated mutant of the succulent plant in the Euphorbiaceae family, genus Euphorbia, native to the shrublands of the Mediterranean climate zone in South Africa. The plant has a low, columnar succulent stem, its epidermis covered with white variegation. The ridges consist of hexagonal tubercles and bear green furrowed patterns; the persistent flower stalk resembles a thorn.
Native distribution: concentrated in the Mediterranean climate zone of the Western Cape Province of South Africa.
Altitude range: primarily grows in the shrubland belt of South Africa’s Mediterranean climate zone.
Soil type: commonly found in well‑drained sandy gravel soils, with a pH neutral to slightly alkaline.
In its native range, the species often coexists with low shrubs, obtaining diffused light through shrub shading, while relying on gravel soils to prevent root waterlogging [1]. Artificial cultivation requires simulating its native soil structure and light conditions.
